Dear Excellency,
I condemn the arrest of Filipino political leader and International League of People's Struggles Chairperson, Prof Jose Maria Sison, in The Hague by Dutch police, and the police raids on the homes of Mr. Luis Jalandoni and Ms. Ruth De Leon in Utrecht and other exiled leaders of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines on August 28, 2007.
This deceitful detention of Prof. Sison is a disgraceful action of the Dutch government. Sison faces no criminal charges of any kind in the Philippines. In fact, trumped up charges against Prof. Sison and others were thrown out by the Supreme Curt of the Philippines this year. It is ridiculous to now raid the homes of these NDFP peace negotiators in Utrecht, when they have been living there for two decades without any incident. It also jeopardizes the advancement of the prospects of peace for the people of the Philippines through peace negotiations.
The denial of visitation rights of Prof. Sison while in confinement by his wife, children, and medical doctor also violates provisions set forth by the United Nations Commission for Refugees.
I call on your government to stop persecuting Filipino progressives, to release Prof. Sison immediately and drop the false charges, and to cease harassment of political exiles in the Netherlands, whose main task is to participate in ongoing peace negotiations with the government of the Philippines, a process now sponsored by the government of Norway.
Respectfully,
|
